Lipoplasty

Lipoplasty is a term that, for the most part, has replaced Liposuction. It involves the addition of an energy source to the fat removal process. Currently, a laser fiber delivers fat-specific light energy transforming the fat to a liquid that is then aspirated, along with some intact fat, with a traditional cannula. This procedure allows for the removal of fat that before was difficult to effect and  more effective shrinkage of skin and connecting fibers.  Older patients and patients lacking good skin elasticity, can now be considered for this less invasive technique.

What to Expect

lipoplasty-birmingham-alLipoplasty is usually performed as an outpatient, under either local anesthesia with sedation for small areas, or a light general anesthesia for multiple areas and positions.

The cannula site incisions are generally located in easily hidden locations and the overall number are kept to a minimum.

Lipoplasty | Post-Surgery Care

All patients are evaluated no later than the day after surgery. Postoperative care and recovery is again discussed in great detail. Care of the operative is detailed in the written and verbal instructions. Phone calls are encouraged if there is need of clarification. There should be no heavy lifting, strenuous activity or “straining” for two more weeks. Return to work or other more specific activities should be addressed with the physician/nurse since there can be a high degree of variability in demand and a plan can often be developed to enable you to return to more normal activity faster.

Compression garments are worn for one month full time and two weeks, half time.

Lipoplasty | Results

Results can be long term but certainly are impacted by weight loss/gain, environmental factors and the natural aging process.
